RISKS FROM ANAESTHESIA

Things to do before your operation (Health)

You must not eat or drink for 6 hours prior to surgery. This is called fasting or being nil by mouth. This is for your safety to ensure that your stomach is empty.

You should continue your usual medications on the day of surgery. They may be taken with a sip of water. There are some exceptions to this. If you take Asprin or non-steroidal anti-inflammotries you should discuss these with your surgeon as they may affect your blood clotting.

Diabetic medication may also need to be altered and this should be discussed with the surgeon, preadmission nurse or the anaesthetist.
